My parents have received a check from Progressive for the balance of Katie’s insurance policy.

While this doesn’t absolve the folks at Progressive of the actions that they’ve taken against my family, it does close a chapter of our lives that my parents and I are eager to leave behind.

In the wake of Katie’s death, Progressive chose over and over to evade their obligations to my sister’s estate and essentially to dare my parents to do something about it. Even after we had beaten them in court and people began to hear our story, Progressive opted to disavow what they had done. They only acknowledged their duty after you, our friends and supporters, let them know that further nonsense would not be tolerated. On behalf of my sister and my parents, I thank you and you alone for the fact that this is over.

If you happen to be a Progressive customer, I recommend that you check out Consumer Reports or J.D. Power. There are companies out there that charge a fair rate and then, charmingly, provide you with actual insurance.

But having said that, I hereby suggest that we take the time we might have spent discussing insurance ethics and instead celebrate absent friends.
